The Radical Reformation, a 4-part series with Dr. Drake Williams III. Visit our deep dive into the works of one of the Radical Reformation's mosst important thinkers, Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig (1489-1561.) Schwenckfeld's understanding of the scriptures and the sacraments paved the way for symbolic and spiritualist interpretations of the Christian message, like Swedenborg's, and it is important to understanding the currents that made such interpretation possible.

Understanding the Christ Event, Part 1, with Rev. Robert McCluskey. Different theological systems have a different idea about salvation. Swedenborg was emphatic that substitutionary atonement, that Jesus died for our sins, and that by professing a belief in Jesus, we are relieved of them, was morally wrong and completely transfigured the true character of the Lord. Instead he promoted a Christus Victor theory, which emphasizes the Lord's victory over the power of death and the influence of the Hells upon it. Understanding the Christ Event, Part 1

Swedenborg's Inward Turn, with Rev. Robert McCluskey. In the mid 1700s, Swedenborg offered to the world a remarkable and profound gift: the internal sense of the Word. Not the objective, historical, literal sense re: events from long ago. Instead, it was a turn to the subjective, personal, spiritual sense re: the inner life of the reader. A worldview which sees human life not as a historical event, but as a psychological experience. We will briefly trace the history of this "inward turn," Swedenborg's contribution to it, and how it continues to inform modern consciousness.Swedenborg's Inward Turn
The Language of Angels, with Dr. Avery Morrow. Dr. Morrow introduces the role that Swedenborg had within 20th century Japanese occult discourse, especially that relating to the origin on language. The notion of a "language of the gods" had fascinated Japanese intellectuals for centuries. Several major Japanese occultists found inspiration in Swedenborg's notion of the language of angels, and sought to wed these theories to their own nationalistic and occult projects. Linguistics, after chemistry, might rightly be called the first esoteric science and Japan gives us another testament to this strange attempt to get at the center of communication.  The Language of Angels
Primitive Baptist Universalism, with Elder Jonathan Buttry. Zoom recording of a presentation by Jonathan Buttry, an Elder at the Holston Valley Church about the Appalachian tradition of Primitive Baptist Universalism. Originating in the late 19th Century, the PBUs teach a highly original theology. The "no-Hellers" as they are often referred to pejoratively locally due to their belief that Hell is not an eternal place of torment, but a state experienced in this life. Primitive Baptist Universalism
The Jacob Frank Heresy, with Rabbi Dr. Jay Michaelson. This program was inspired by "The Books of Jacob" that some Library members had recently read. The Frankist Sabbatean movement, a mystical and heterodox Jewish sect that emerged in the 18th century, held complex and often contriversial views on the body and within. In his discussion, Rabbi Michaelson dismisses the import of the sect discussed in the book.
